Chas - Accessibility

Last reviewed: September 24, 2026 - Chas 1.7 on macOS 15 or later

The short version: Chas follows dark appearance, Reduce Motion, Reduce Transparency, Increase Contrast and Differentiate Without Color, and the timer and the list of entries can be used from the keyboard. VoiceOver and Voice Control work across most of the app, but every task has not yet been checked from start to finish with them, so the App Store page does not list them for now. The gaps we know about are under Known limitations.

This page is the accessibility information linked from Chas's App Store page. It says, feature by feature, what the app supports and where the gaps are. It is reviewed with every release; the date above is the last time it was checked against the app.

The App Store accessibility labels

Apple's labels describe an app as supporting a feature only when every typical task can be completed with it. This is where Chas stands on each one, in Apple's order.

VoiceOver
Not listed yet. The timer, entries, progress rings, charts and the menu bar item all have labels. Day and week headers are headings, so the rotor can jump between days. Editing, deleting and opening an entry's link are in the Actions rotor. While you type a description or search a picker, VoiceOver reads how many suggestions there are and which one is highlighted. The label will be added once every task has been checked end to end and the issues below are fixed.
Voice Control
Not listed yet. Controls have spoken names, and a closed picker answers both to the value shown on it and to the name of the field, so "Click Acme" and "Click Project" both open it. Entries in the list answer to their description. Two buttons that appear only on hover are not numbered yet; see Known limitations.
Larger Text
Not listed. Chas does not follow the system Text Size setting. It has its own: Settings → Appearance → Font size, with Small, Medium and Large. Nothing is cut off at Large.
Dark Interface
Supported. Chas follows the system appearance and every window has a full dark theme.
Differentiate Without Color
Supported. A project's colour dot always sits next to its name. Start and stop are different symbols. Progress rings show progress by the length of the arc, and time over the goal as a second lap. The weekly bar is split into projects by colour; with Differentiate Without Color turned on, a line of text under it names the top projects and their hours.
Sufficient Contrast
Not listed. In the standard light appearance, secondary text such as times and dates measures about 3.9:1, and project names drawn in the project's colour go lower, below the 4.5:1 Apple asks for. With Increase Contrast on, secondary text and project names switch to the main text colour, and the green timer, the red delete button and the blue "Create" option switch to darker variants that pass. One exception remains; see Known limitations.
Reduced Motion
Supported. With Reduce Motion on, the stop button no longer pulses, the cat in Settings sleeps without moving, progress rings appear without sweeping, numbers in Insights fade instead of rolling, and switching views or Settings tabs resizes the window at once. Short fades on hover and on pop-up lists remain.
Captions
Not applicable. Chas has no audio or video.
Audio Descriptions
Not applicable. Chas has no audio or video.

Other settings Chas honours

Increase Contrast
Secondary text becomes full-strength text, accent colours get darker variants in the light appearance, and cards get a visible border.
Reduce Transparency
The translucent cards in the main window become opaque, with a border.
Languages
Chas is available in English, Ukrainian, German, French, Spanish and Japanese.

Using Chas from the keyboard

  1. Type what you are working on in What's next?. Use ↓ and ↑ to pick one of the suggestions and Return to start the timer. ⌘S starts and stops the timer from anywhere in the main window.
  2. Press Tab to move into the list of entries. ↓ and ↑ move between entries, Return opens the editor, Space expands or collapses a group of repeated entries, and Delete deletes the entry.
  3. In the editor, Return saves and Esc cancels.
  4. ⌘1, ⌘2 and ⌘3 switch between the Compact, Summary and Full views. ⌘E opens Reports, ⌘⇧D opens the Data window, ⌘, opens Settings.

Known limitations

These are the things we know about in the current version. Each has a fix planned; when one ships, it comes off this list.

Tell us what is in the way

If something in Chas does not work with the way you use your Mac, we want to know. Say which version of macOS and which setting or assistive technology you were using, and what happened. Accessibility reports are answered, and fixes for them go ahead of other work.
